Post Mortem

The Space, Assembly Edinburgh & International Tour - 2019

Remember teenage love? Obsessive and knotted together. Nancy and Alex met in biology class dissecting a pig heart. They shared secrets, comic books, and classic Dido songs. They believed their love was eternal. Until they broke it. Now, reunited ten years later at their mutual friends’ wedding, another dissection begins.

Reviews

  • "Performed across the length of a white stage, they are beautifully illuminated by subtle lighting. It casts their shadows across the high walls of The Space, making the movement all the more haunting and beautiful"

  • "With the recurrent sound of a heartbeat setting the pace, the performers' stage presence is mesmerising... At crucial times, lights positioned on the floor project on the back wall their oversized shadows - a reminder that our unsolved issues can expand and take over our lives"

  • "Unexpectedly deep and well directed by Jessica Rose McVay with sensitive lighting and music coupled with an undertone of a heartbeat present throughout"

  • "A heartbeat keeps time throughout this piece, acting as a metronome against ex-lovers Alex and Nancy's movement. They retrace stems, relive past hurt and move towards some semblance of closure in this dissection of a break-up ten years earlier"

  • "Along with the performers the team of director, Jessica Rose McVay, designer Eleanor Bull and Will Alder in charge of sound have transformed this simple plot into an intense exploration of romance and breakdown"

  • "Director Jessica Rose McVay has used the room well, making good use of lighting to move us swiftly from place to place whilst also allowing the physical moments the time they need to play out fully"

  • "The bare bones of this story are filled out in that a script provides impassioned monologues and fast-paced dialogue combined with movement sequences, visuals, sound and evocative lighting"
